GRESHAM -- An officer-involved shooting ended with a man dead about 7:30 p.m. Monday on Southeast Oak Street near 238th Avenue, the Gresham Police Department reported.
Police said no officer was injured in the incident. An investigation was expected to continue into the night with Gresham, Portland, Multnomah County and Troutdale officers.
Officer John Rasmussen, a police spokesman, said a family called to report a potentially suicidal member about 7 p.m. near Southeast 240th Avenue and Oak Street.
When officers arrived, the man came out of the family home with a rifle, Rasmussen said. The man's wife and a child remained at the home.
Rasmussen had not yet confirmed how the incident unfolded or who fired shots, but he said it ended with the man dead.
The man was not immediately identified. Rasmussen expected to release his name and other details Tuesday morning.
David Mason, 51, who lives down the block from the home, said he heard two shots, and his wife heard six. But when they looked outside, they saw only police cars and a fire engine.
Southeast Oak Street was blocked off from 238th Avenue to Cherry Park Road during the investigation.
The incident followed the Jan. 5 fatal shooting of Rainier Police Chief Ralph Painter in a confrontation with a suspect at a car stereo shop in the Columbia River community, and the Jan. 23 critical wounding of Lincoln City Police Officer Steven Dodds in a traffic stop along U.S. 101 in the Oregon coastal city.
