With COVID-19 cases rising, PMC issues order
Failing to wear a mask in the city will now result in a fine of Rs 500 or worse, a police case. With number of cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) rising, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) commissioner issued an order on Wednesday to impose the fine.
Face masks have been an effective tool in preventing the spread of COVID-19. Hence, as the implementation of Disaster Management Act started, authorities ended up making wearing masks compulsory for the general public.
However, even as the activities returned to normal with Unlock 1.0, people have been seen avoiding wearing mask entirely or removing them despite being in public spaces.
The increasing number of cases has become a cause of concern for the authorities. Considering the situation, PMC commissioner Shekhar Gaikwad issued the order that states that various measures are being taken to curb the spread of COVID-19. According to the Disaster Management Act, 2005, a police case can be registered against a person for failing to abide by the mandates of the government and legal action can be taken against the person.
The civic authorities have been given the authority to take action. With this authority, Gaikwad has made it compulsory for the citizens to wear masks. Any person who steps out of their house will have to wear a mask. The mandate will be applicable even while entering or working in a government or private office along with public spaces.
Afine of Rs 500 will be imposed on the person who fails to abide by the rule. The ones who do not pay the fine will have to face legal action and the civic authorities will then register a police case. The civic body’s health officers have been given the authority to take action against violators.
Speaking to Mirror, Gaikwad said, “The mandate existed in the orders issued by the central and state government. However, separate orders have been issued for areas under the civic body’s jurisdiction. Given the spread of COVID-19, this was a necessary measure. So we have decided to impose a fine which is being implemented for the city.”
