KOCHI: The public works department’s (PWD) helpline is receiving large number of complaints from the public regarding the pathetic condition of roads in Ernakulam. The department has received 72 complaints in three days after
PWD
resumed service of the helpline on Wednesday.
According to PWD data, this is the highest number of complaints reported from any other districts in the state, vindicating the public outcry on the deteriorating condition of roads in Ernakulam.
The industrial capital of Kerala is followed by
Palakkad
and
Wayanad
with 41 and 35 complaints, respectively. On Wednesday, the PWD officials attended 691 calls of which 225 complaints were related to PWD roads. The rest was regarding unavailability of ration cards and poor condition of roads falling under local self-government departments.
On the second day, helpline received 1,925 calls of which 147 were related to PWD roads. On the third day, officials attended 2,279 complaints of which 150 belonged to PWD. On the fourth day, officials attended 626 complaints till 3pm and of which 86 were related to PWD roads.
“When we receive a
complaint
we forward it to assistant executive engineers in the respective areas and the official concerned will contact the complainant within 48 hours to take measures to repair roads. Since we register complaints on poor condition of roads owned by PWD, the complaints of LSGD roads leave unattended. It is the LSGDs who should take steps to repair their roads using plan and own funds,” said an official in the helpline section of PWD in Thiruvananthapuram.
Meanwhile, Kochi corporation officials said the condition of their roads were much better than PWD roads. The local body owns 200-km road. PWD owns 1,204km road in the district, including four major roads in the city. They are MG Road, Shanmugham Road, Goshree Road and Broadway Road.
“There are potholes on Broadway and Goshree Road. We find it difficult to take up road work during night due to incessant rain for the past 10 to 15 days. Vyttila-Pettah and Civil Line Road leading from Palarivattom to Kakkanad are in pathetic condition. We own only 700m road on Vyttila-Pettah Road and we will do interlocking there at a cost of Rs 1.87 crore. We did resurfacing of these roads in 2013,” said an Ernakulam executive engineer
