music continues to grow, two Indian musicians are paying tribute to one of its pioneers.

Musician Basant Madhur and composer Amit Sengupta are hosting a tribute concert to three-time Grammy Award-winning sitar player Ravi Shankar at the Dorothy Winstone Centre on March 16.

Mr Shankar died in December last year at the age of 92.

He is credited with introducing Indian music to the West and influencing artists across a wide range of genres - most famously The Beatles.

The legendary sitar maestro was honoured posthumously with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 55th Grammy Awards last month.

He is the first Indian musician to receive the prestigious award.

One of Mr Shankar's leading disciples, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, will make his New Zealand debut to headline at the concert. The Grammy Award winning Indian slide-guitar player created a modified guitar, the mohan veena.

Mr Madhur says it will be an honour to play with him.

"I feel so proud but a bit nervous. I have been playing music for many years and have played with equally good musicians so that has already given me confidence but this feels totally different."

Indian classical music is growing in popularity across all communities in New Zealand, he says.

His students at the Blockhouse Bay School of Indian Music include musicians from South African, Malaysian and European backgrounds.

There is no language barrier playing the tabla - Indian hand drums - which Mr Madhur has been playing for more than 20 years.

Fellow music teacher Mr Sengupta has composed music for 38 Indian films and continues to teach at the Mohammed Rafi Academy of Music.

The concert is at the Dorothy Winstone Centre, Auckland Girls Grammar. Tickets are available from Yogiji Food Mart, Carr Rd, Mt Roskill and Lotus Foreign Exchange, Westfield St Lukes
