Boat capsized at Amtala Ghat, 15 feared dead

Midnapur; 23nd September 2018: As the city was wrapping up its Durga Puja celebrations, a horrific accident happened yesterday evening at Amtala Ghat, as a boat carrying 20 people capsized in the Ganga river.

As per the records of three witnesses from the scene, the victims were on their way to their home village, situated on the opposite bank of Amtala Ghat. At 6pm, the people had boarded with the boatman. At 6:15pm, as soon as the boat had crossed midway, a boulder surfaced from the river and crashed against the hull on the starboard side of the boat. Among the ten on-lookers of the scene, four jumped into the river to save the victims. Among them, 15 could not be rescued. However, the four men were able to recover 5 bodies so far; of them, two were women and two children.

As the local police have reported, rescue operations are working on this incident. The civic authorities are doing their utmost to pay reparations to the respective families of the victims. Also, the panchayat has announced that they will allot lifeguards on every ghat for the protection of the people who commute via waterways.

Disastrous Boat Capsize

Midnapur, September 22, 5 p.m : A fateful accident took place at the Amtala Ghat in Midnapur today at about four in the afternoon.

A ferry boat overloaded with sixty passengers had just left the Amtala Ghat at the Kansabati River when it capsized in the deep waters of the overflowing river.

Owing to the late monsoons the river was brimming with water. It being a full moon with the high tide there was a strong current flowing.

The boat being overloaded, its capacity being of twenty passengers only, could not resist the tide and overturned.

Fifteen people are feared killed . Five bodies have been so far recovered, two being women and two children. The bodies are yet to be identified or claimed.

Twenty people have been rescued by the local people. They are undergoing treatment. The Transport Minister has rushed to the area and has asked for a probe.

A compensation of two lakhs rupees has been declared by the Chief Minister of West Bengal.
