January 19 : A devastating rail mishap took place near Mahim signal post yesterday. At about 10 p.m. an local train running at full speed derailed few kilometres ahead of the signal post. It had jolted along some distance before coming to a shuddering stop. The presence of mind and timely action of the motorman Mr. Ajith prevented greater loss of life and property. The chief casualties were those who, in panic , jumped off the running train. The mishap left 80 passengers injured, many of them seriously . Bystanders and other road travelers rushed to the aid of the injured. The police were informed of the accident almost immediately . People of the locality joined the relief operations . All the injured were taken to the Railway Hospital nearby in Byculla.
