On September 4, 2018, at around 4.45 pm, a 20-metre span of the Majerhat Bridge at Mjerhat, Kolkata collapsed.
The cause for the incident was determined to be the lack of proper maintenance over the year. The link between Behala and the rest of Kolkata had been cut off due to the collapse. In the incident, a minibus and a few bikes got caught in the debris, due to which 3 died and 21 were injured.
When the construction company was confronted, they stepped forward to accept the charges pressed on them during a press conference. They were ready to go through the legal procedures as was demanded by the public. They also offered Rs. 5 lakh for the deceased's family and Rs 10,000 for the injured victims as compensation.
