Petroleum (/pəˈtroʊliəm/) is a naturally occurring, yellowish-black liquid found in geological formations beneath the Earth's surface. It is commonly refined into various types of fuels. Components of petroleum are separated using a technique called fractional distillation, i.e. separation of a liquid mixture into fractions differing in boiling point by means of distillation, typically using a fractionating column.

It consists of hydrocarbons of various molecular weights and other organic compounds.[1] The name petroleum covers both naturally occurring unprocessed crude oil and petroleum products that are made up of refined crude oil. A fossil fuel, petroleum is formed when large quantities of dead organisms, mostly zooplankton and algae, are buried underneath sedimentary rock and subjected to both intense heat and pressure

Petroleum is a natural resource which was formed by the dead plants and animals in the sea .their bodies sank to the bottom of the sea and were covered by several layers of sand and mud. Tremendous pressure and heat slowly converted the dead remains to petroleum and natural gas. the word petroleum is derived from Patra (Rock) and oleum (oil) as it is mined from, between the rocks under Earth. it is sound trapped between sedimentary rock inside the earth under the land or under the sea. petroleum, also called crude oil, is a mixture of hydrocarbons having different boiling points. the crude oil is split into various types of products like LPG ,petrol ,kerosene oil ,diesel, lubricating oil, paraffin wax, asphalt, etc
