The winter solstice is the time when the sun has the biggest distance to the Tropic of Cancer. After this, the sun is going to move to back in the direction of the equator.

The Earth revolves around the Sun. The sunlight reaches the Earth at an angle. On each day of the year, the sun will be perpendicular at a given latitude. At the start of spring and at the start of autumn it passes over the equator. On the June Solstice it is over the Tropic of Cancer, at 23.5 degrees north.

HERE YOUR ANSWER
The winter Solstice, also known as midwinter, is an astronomical phenomenon marking the day with the shortest period of day light and the longest night of the year. In the northern hemisphere this is the december Solstice and in the southern hemisphere this is the June Solstice.

Hope it helps you

soumya337: why there is difference between the time in southern and northern hemisphere
RiyuSharma: because south and North are opposite to each other.
soumya337: why it is December in Southern hemisphere but is June in Northern hemisphere
zaz090: Earth rotates around its axis. In June, when the Northern Hemisphere is tilted toward the sun, the sun's rays hit it for a greater part of the day than in winter. This means it gets more hours of daylight. In December, when The Northern Hemisphere is tilted away from the sun, with fewer hours of daylight.
zaz090: The seasons in the Northern Hemisphere are the opposite of those in the Southern Hemisphere. This means that in Argentina and Australia, winter begins in June. The wintersolstice in the Southern Hemisphere is June 20 or 21, while the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, is December
