Afonso de Albuquerque was the Duke of Goa from 1453 to 1515 and a Portuguese general, empire builder and statesman. He was however best known for his role as the Governor of India.

He was believed to be the pioneer of the Portuguese imperial system and the backbone behind the set up of the Portuguese sea empire in the East.

Albuquerque was an active participant in Portugal’s wars that took place in Africa and Spain.

He was associated with various names such as The Terrible, The Great, The Portuguese Mars, The Lion of the Seas and The Caesar of the East.
