In botany, apical dominance is the phenomenon whereby the main, central stem of the plant is dominant over other side stems; on a branch the main stem of the branch is further dominant over its own side branchlets.

In Botany, it is basically a phenomenon through which the main stem of the plant will grow in a strong manner than the other sides or parts of the stem.

As per the physiology of the plants, this dominance or pressure is exerted by the shoot apex and the terminal bud over the lateral buds development.

Basically, there are four stages in this phenomenon.
