Applications of biotechnology in agriculture involves scientific techniques such as genetically modified organisms(GMO) , Bt cotton , pest resistant plants .

• It helps in modifying plants , animals and microorganisms .

• It improves the agricultural productivity .

• It uses techniques like genetic engineering and tissue culture .

Genetically modified crops :

1. They more tolerant to stresses such as drought , cold , heat , etc.
2. They are used to prevent post harvest losses .
3. They have enhanced nutritional values . Example : vitamin A

Bt Cotton

1. They are genetically modified version of cotton . 'bt' stands for Bacillus thuringiensis .
2. This microbe produce an insecticidal protein or toxins that kills other insects such as tobacco budworm ,flies , mosquitoes , beetles etc.

Pest resistant plants

1. A specific nematode ' Meloidegyne incognitia' infects the roots of tobacco plants and cayse decrease in yield.
2. To prevent this infestation, a novel strategy was adopted which is based on the process of RNA interference (RNAi) . It is a method of cellular defence in all eukaryotes .
3. Scientists introduced nematode specific genes into host plant using Agrobacterium vectors .
