balaji vishwanath(bhat) deshmukh (1662-1720) better known as balaji vishwanath,was the first of the series of heriditary peshwas(marathi priminister) hailing from the brahmin family who gained effective control of maratha empire during the 18th century.balaji vishwanath assisted a young martha empror shahu to consolidate his grip on the kingdome that have been racked by civil war and presistent attack by the mughals under aurangzeb.

Balaji Vishwanath was born on 1st Jan 1662 in a Hindu family of Konkan and died on 12th April 1720 at the age of 58. He is called the second founder of Maratha empire.
H became the first peshwa in 1713 .
