Binomial nomenclature is the way biologists give names to all living beings. As the prefix bi- suggests, the name will have two words: the first word will be the GENUS name, and it will always start with a capital letter; the second word is the epithet that is specific to that species, and it is always written without a capital letter. The entire name should be written in italics if you are using a computer or underlined if you are writting by hand.

Here is an example: Homo sapiens -  this is a human being. Homo is the name of the genus, and sapiens is Latin for 'wise'.
