A cell cycle is a series of events that takes place in a cell as it grows and divides. A cell spends most of its time in what is called interphase, and during this time it grows, replicates its chromosomes, and prepares for cell division. The cell then leaves interphase, undergoes mitosis, and completes its division.

Cell cycle

Explanation:

  • A cell undergoes a series of events that result in duplication of cell along with DNA, this event is known as cell cycle.
  • A eukaryotic cell is divided into two main phases - Karyokinesis and cytokinesis
  • Karyokinesis -Interphase is the preparatory phase of the cell cycle , cell prepares for division by going cell growth and dna replication.
  • It includes G1 , S and G2 phase.
  • The comes the mitotic(somatic cells) or meiotic phase(reproductive cells).
  • Mitotic phase includes prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase.
  • Meiotic phase includes ProphaseI, metaphaseI, anaphaseI, telophaseI, then Pophase II, metaphase II, anaphase II, telophase  II.
  • It is then followed by cytokinesis.
