Cyanide Poisoning

Explanation:-

Cyanide poisoning is poisoning that results from exposure to any of several forms of cyanide. Early symptoms include headache, dizziness, fast heart rate, shortness of breath, and vomiting. This phase may then be followed by seizures, slow heart rate, low blood pressure, loss of consciousness, and cardiac arrest.

Treatment:-

  • Sodium nitrite or amyl nitrite can be used in cyanide poisoning. It promotes the formation of methemoglobin (MetHb), which binds CN– ions, forming cyanomethemoglobin. This prevents the inhibitory action of CN– on complex IV of the electron transport chain.

  • Cyanomethemoglobin is then reconverted to methemoglobin by treatment with sodium thiosulfate, forming the less toxic thiocyanate on (SCN–). MetHb is converted to oxyhemoglobin with methylene blue.
