Dental caries is the scientific term for tooth decay or cavities. It is caused by specific types of bacteria. They produce acid that destroys the tooth's enamel and the layer under it, the dentin. Many different types of bacteria normally live in the human mouth.

dental caries or tooth decay causes gradual softening of enamel and dentine. it begins when bacteria acting on Sugars reduce acids that softence or demineralised is the enamel . masses of bacterial cells together with food particles stick to the teeth to form dental plaque. saliva cannot reach the tooth surface to neutralize the acid as plaque covers the teeth. brushing the teeth after eating removes the plague before the bacteria produce acid .if untreated microorganisms may invade the pulp which causes inflammation and infection
