Heya friend,

Let's have a simple definition of germination:-

Germination is the process of formation of a seedling developed from the embryo.

There are two types of germination :-
1. Epigeal germination.
2.Hypogeal germination.

We r going to know about Epigeal germination in this answer :-

From the name itself "epi" means above and "geo" means earth. In this type of germination the cotyledons are pushed above the ground.
Let's take example of bean seed, it shows epigeal germination:-

1.The seed absorbs water and swells.

2.The radicle grows downwards up form the root system.

3.The arched hypocotyl grows forming an loop above the soil and then it straightens bringing the cotyledons above the soil. This cotyledons become the first green leaves and soon fall off after the foliage leaves grow.

Epigeal germination:- Here because of the hypocotyl growth which means elongation, cotyledons are forced to pushed out of the soil. This is known as epigeal germination.

Some points on epigeal germination are as follows:-

1. This type of germination usually occurs in Capsella, bean, tamarind are the some examples of this.

2. In some cases, these above ground cotyledons become green leaf.

3. Cases in which they become cotyledonary then they start performing as photosynthetic function.

4. They help in the photosynthesis function till the independency of seedling.
