Huynh Phu So is also known as Phat thay which means Buddha Master in Vietnamese. He founded the Hoa Hao religious tradition. He was born in Hoa Hao village, in Vietnam in 1920. His father was a peasant who had enough wealth. Huynh Phu So was quite ill when he was young and could pass high school due to his father's influence. After that he went to study from a hermit in the Seven Mountains. Later he returned to his village. In May 1939, on a stormy night he was suddenly cured of his illness. He started propounding his religious teachings. His teachings were based on Buddhism. He offered free consultations and performed miracles. He gained nearly one lakh followers within a year.
