The indigo revolt was a peasant movement and subsequent uprising of indigo farmers against indigo planters in Bengal in the year 1859. The revolt started in villages of Gobindapur and Chaugacha, in Krishnanagar where the rebellion was led against planters. Indigo planting in Bengal dated back to 1777. With expansion of British power in Nawabatte of Bengal indigo became more and more commercially profitable because of demand of blue dye in Europe. The indigo planters persuaded the peasents to plant indigo instead of food crop. They provided loans at a very high interest. This led to indebtedness among farmers. The price paid to farmers was also very low. The farmers made no profit and we're also unprotected from indigo planters as all laws are favourable to planters. Even the zamindar also supported the planters. Under this severe conditions farmers decided to revolt.
