Jhoom farming is also referred to shifting cultivation or slash and burn farming in India, this type of farming is performed in hilly terrain like North East and Mizoram.

"Jhoom System" or "Slash and Burn Agriculture" is a type of tribal agricultural practice.

A selected piece of forest land is chosen, and then cleared for agriculture by setting the land on fire and burning everything to ashes.

The cleared land is then used to grow crops like rice, vegetables or fruits.

After a few jhoom cycles, the land loses all its fertility and the habitants are forced to shift to some other area, leaving behind a barren piece of land.
