The greatest amongst the Bhakti saints was Kabir. Born in 1398 AD at Benaras to a Brahmin widow, he was brought up by a Muslim weaver, Neeru and his wife Neema. They were childless, so they brought him up as their own son. As Kabir grew up, he adapted the profession of his Foster father and become a Weaver himself.
Kabir had a spiritual bent of mind from his early childhood. He adopted Swami Ramananda as his spiritual Guru. He had his first lesson in spiritually from him. In due course of time, Kabir left his Guru and started preaching his own ideas. Kabir's teachings are recorded in Bijak.
Kabir was both a religious and social reformer. He wanted to transform almost whole society and bring about an era of equality and brotherhood of man. He condemned almost all evils prevailing in the contemporary Indian society as well as in both Hinduism and Islam.
Kabir was gifted natural poet. His dohas or couplets are full of ideas and vivid images.
