Kalpana Chawla was born on 17th March, 1962 and died on 1st February, 2003 in Karnal, India. She was the first Indian - American astronaut and also the first woman in space. She first flew on the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997 as a mission specialist and primary robotic arm operator. In 2003, Kalpana was one of the seven victims of the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.
