He was popularly known as the "kingmaker" as he was instrumental in bringing to power the two prime ministers of India they are Lal bahadur shastri(1964) and Indira gandhi (1966), and he is widely acknowledged for his schemes such as mid day meals and free education. He was awarded the highest civilian award the bharat ratna posthumously.
