Lipid composition of plasma membrane

Explanation:

  • Cell membrane or plasma membrane is composed of a large variety of proteins, lipids which are present in the form of cholesterol, phospholipid, galactolipid, and sphingolipid, and carbohydrates in the form of glycolipids and glycoproteins.
  • The lipid molecules are constituted of glycerol and fatty acids. Phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine and sphingomyelin are the phospholipids found in the plasma membrane and are associated with its outer protein shell.
  • The lipid molecules are observed in two parts in the membrane - a head (designated as polar end) and two tails (designated as non-polar end). Glycerol constitutes the head and is hydrophilic in nature and the fatty acids constitute the tails and are hydrophobic in nature.
