A note on Lushkov's journey from being in the Russian choir to working at the notary office:
Lushkov was a lazy man who was thrown out of the Russian choir because he was drunk. From then on, he just begged, drank and lied his way saying he was a student or a schoolmaster. One day he lied to a lawyer Skvortsov and was caught red-handed. He got a dressing down from him and asked him to do work for a living. The beggar was mortified and agreed to cut wood for him as he ordered.
The lawyer’s cook, Olga took him inside to show him the work. Olga was harsh to the beggar all the time. Skvortsov asked him to come every month and cut wood if he wanted. He said his doors were always open for him to come and do work. Every month, the beggar came to cut wood and went off. The lawyer was moving to another place and asked the beggar to see his friend who would give him some work. The lawyer left and years rolled by.
One day the lawyer was visiting the cinemas when he saw a man who looked like Lushkov. He called out to him and Lushkov told him that he was working in a notary office, thanks to him and more so to his cook Olga. He further went on to explain that every time he came to cut wood, Olga would shout at him and say things like he would suffer even after he dies, and abuse him for being a drunkard, all the time crying for him and cutting the wood by herself. He told the lawyer that it was Olga’s words and her noble action that brought about a change in him. He said that he was saved by Olga.
