The process by which certain sections of the society are kept at lower social standing is known as marginalization. The people who suffer marginalisation are known as marginalised groups. Schedule castes, schedule tribes, women and children belong to marginalized communities.

These include the poor among the scheduled castes (SCs), the scheduled tribes (STs), the denotified tribes (DNTs), the disabled, women and religious minorities.
