Northern plains lie in the south of Himalayas Mountains and north of Deccan plateau. It is formed by flooding of three major rivers- Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra. It is drained by many other rivers like Yamuna, Ghaghara, Gandak etc. ... The soil of these plains is very fertile.

Formation :-
- Formed by the interplay of three major river systems , namely - The Indus , the Ganga & the Brahmaputra .

- The rivers , after descending from the mountains , deposit pebbles in a narrow belt of about 8 to 16 km in width lying parallel to the slopes of the Shiwaliks .
2. Terai :-
- South to this belt , the streams reemerge & create a wet , swampy & marshy region known as Terai .
3. Bhangar :-
- The largest part of the northern plain formed by the older alluvium is called Bhangar .
4. Khadar :-
- The newer & younger deposits of the floodplains are called Khadar . These are fertile as they are renewed every year .

- Suitable land for agriculture as there is a flat & fertile land .
- Good climatic conditions .
- availability of good water resources .
