Northern plains lie in the south of Himalayas Mountains and north of Deccan plateau. It is formed by flooding of three major rivers- Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra. It is drained by many other rivers like Yamuna, Ghaghara, Gandak etc. ... The soil of these plains is very fertile.

  • located in the southern part of Himalayas .
  • It covers over an area of 7 lakh sq. km .

Formation :-

  • Formed by the interplay of three major river systems , namely - The Indus , the Ganga & the Brahmaputra .

Division :-

  • on the basis of river .

  1. Indus plain :-
  • formed by river Indus & it's tributaries .

2. Ganga plain :-

  • Formed by river Ganga & it's tributaries .

3. Brahmaputra plain :-

  • formed by river Brahmaputra and it's tributaries .

  • On the basis of relief feature :-

  1. Bhabar :-
  • The rivers , after descending from the mountains , deposit pebbles in a narrow belt of about 8 to 16 km in width lying parallel to the slopes of the Shiwaliks .

2. Terai :-

  • South to this belt , the streams reemerge & create a wet , swampy & marshy region known as Terai .

3. Bhangar :-

  • The largest part of the northern plain formed by the older alluvium is called Bhangar .

4. Khadar :-

  • The newer & younger deposits of the floodplains are called Khadar . These are fertile as they are renewed every year .

Significance :-

  • Suitable land for agriculture as there is a flat & fertile land .
  • Good climatic conditions .
  • availability of good water resources .
