Heart consist of a double-walled layer it is called pericardium.

Pericardium gives protection to the heart. Pericardium looks sac-like structure present around the heart.

It consists of two layers one is Fibrous pericardium and the second one is serous pericardium.

Pericardial fluid is present in the sac. It lubricates the heart. Pericardium protects the heart from infections and prevents excessive dilation of the heart.

Pericardium:

  • The pericardium is outer covering of heart. It’s a bi-layered structure that closes the entire heart except for a region over right atria where the great vessels enter or leave the heart.
  • This is anatomically a layer of peritoneum. The peritoneum is the layer of membrane that encloses most of the internal organs. For every organ, it has different names – like pleura for lungs, etc..
  • Inflammation of pericardium is called pancarditis. Pericardium has a fluid inside it to restrict the friction and to act as a shock absorber.
