Landscape of India has "diverse elements", all on one landmass. The wide range of physical features of India makes the nation a "complete geographical study"
Explanation:
The physical features of India can be categorised into 6 broad categories in accordance to their physiographic forms:
Himalayan Mountains: The Himalayan folding mountain range is the northernmost landscape of the nation. The Himalayan Mountains are the most elevated and rugged of the world, although geologically young. These mountains form an arc as they stretch across 2500 KM from Kashmir to the north via Arunachal Pradesh to the south east. This helps keep the cold arctic winds from reaching the tropical landmass.
Northern Plains: India's 3 main river systems — Ganga, Indus, & the Brahmaputra and their tributaries — exist in the foothills of the Himalayas. Since these river basins have an enormous amount of alluvial deposits from those glacial rivers, over the centuries these regions grew fertile and led to the Northern Plains. The North Plains can also be divided into three essential parts: the Punjab Plains ( Indus River and its tributaries lead to the formation of these vast plains), the Ganga Plain (extend in states of Haryana, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Jharkhand, & West Bengal) & The Brahmaputra Plains (encompasses major parts of Assam & other Northeastern States)
Peninsular Plateau: The oldest landmass which is the result of the tectonic shifts of the Gondwanaland. This massive plateau area is further divided as the Central Highlands including a large part of the Malwa Plateau, and the Deccan Plateau, where The Eastern Ghats & the Western Ghats borders it on either sides
Indian Desert: The desert comprise - In the west fringes of the Aravali Plateau, the undulated, sandy plains are formed with dunes of sand. This area is the aridest in the world and thus low in greenery with annual rainfall as little as 150 mm. The states of Rajasthan and northwest Gujarat form the desert region jointly.
The Coastal Plains: The narrow strips of the coastal plains sit right on the outer edges of the Indian peninsula. These areas cover the east coastlines of the Bay of Bengal and the west coastlines of the Arabian Sea. The western coast comprise -the Konkan Coast ( Maharashtra & Goa), the Kannada Plains (covering coastal Karnataka), Malabar Coast (Kerala) and the eastern coast comprise the Northern Circar and the Coromandel Coast.
Islands: In the two oceans that cover the largest land mass of the subcontinent there are two sets of islands (Lakshadweep & Anadaman & Nicobar Islands). The island region is separated by the mainland & the seas.
