The plant cells lose its water through osmotic pressure this is called plasmolysis. In this process, the cell collapses, and the cell membrane pulls away from the cell wall. Cell becomes shrinked when we put the plant in hypertonic solution because of the osmotic pressure.

Plasmolysis occurs rarely in nature. It is very harmful to the plant because of the loss of water the plant can't survive.

Plasmolysis:

  • The plant cell living in the hypertonic solution, the water enters the cell via the osmosis process and hence the cell shrinks causing the cell wall to shrink. This is the process of plasmolysis and "cell is said to be plasmolyzed".
  • The "plasmolysis" is the "shrinking of the protoplasm" in terms of loss of water loss from the cells. The best example is the shrinking of "red blood cells" in the salt solution.
