Repetition refer to repeating words, phrases, or sentences a couple of times, so that the message or idea is conveyed more clearly. It is seen used commonly in prose and in poetry and is a rhetorical method which is used to give emphasis, indicate power or to show unity.
Examples of repetition are:
1. How the danger sinks and swells,
By the sinking or the swelling in the anger of the bells,
Of the bells,
Of the bells, bells, bells, bells,
Bells, bells, bells—
In the clamor and the clangor of the bells!
The word “bells” is repeated 62 times throughout the poem
2. Because I do not hope to turn again
Because I do not hope
Because I do not hope to turn…
The work has been taken from T.S. Elliott 's, Ash-Wednesday”. The phrase "I do not hope" is repeated, more than once.
3. “Nory was a Catholic because her mother was a Catholic, and Nory’s mother was a Catholic because her father was a Catholic, and her father was a Catholic because his mother was a Catholic, or had been.”
Excerpt taken from Nicholson Baker, The Everlasting Story of Nory. We see the word "Catholic" repeated six times.
4.“Because the world is a place of silence, the sky at night when the birds have gone is a vast silent place.”
Passage taken from Colm Toibin, The Testament of Mary. The repetitions are silence and silent. Though they are not similar, it is a kind of rhetorical device.
5. “Every person had a star, every star had a friend, and for every person carrying a star there was someone else who reflected it, and everyone carried this reflection like a secret confidante in the heart.
Excerpt taken from Orhan Pamuk, Snow. The word "Star" is repeated three times, "Person" twice and "reflected/reflection" is also repeated twice.
