Many women began participating in the Indian freedom struggles as early as 1817. The role played by women in the War of Independence (the Great Revolt) of 1857 was creditable and invited the admiration even leaders of the Revolt. Rani of Ramgarh, Rani Jindan Kaur, Rani Tace Bai, Baiza Bai, Chauhan Rani, Tapasvini Maharani daringly led their troops into the battlefield. Rani Lakshmi Bai was one of the greatest examples of heroism.

Thanks to Gandhi's encouragement, many more women joined in the INC's struggle as well. Women sought to become independent and began to spin khadi as a means of earning livelihood and as a way to boycott foreign cloth. Many women organised and participated in strikes and Hartals and picketed English shops. Many women went to jail for their rebellion as well.

Sarojini Naidu worked as an active politician and freedom fighter. Gopal Krishna Gokhale told her to use her poetry and her beautiful words to rejuvenate the spirit of independence in the hearts of villagers. In August 1914, she met Mahatma Gandhi, and from then onwards devoted her energy to the freedom movement.

Many women also went ahead and joined Gandhi in the Dandi March as well.

Answer:

Women shouldered critical responsibilities in India's struggle for freedom. They held public meetings, organized picketing of shops selling foreign alcohol and articles, sold Khadi and actively participated in National Movements. They bravely faced the baton of the police and went to jails.
