The Indian Statutory Commission was a group of seven British Members of Parliament of United Kingdom that had been dispatched to India in 1928 to study constitutional reform in Britain's most important colonial dependency. It was commonly referred to as the Simon Commission after its chairman, Sir John Simon.

In 1927, the government of England appointed a commission. Its chairman was Sir John Simon. Therefore this commission is known as simon commission. This commission reached India in 1928. The commission came to assess the results of reforms of 1919. There was no Indian member included in this commission. Therfore ,the commission faced protests at various places in India. Wherever his commission went, it was greeted with black flags. These peaceful demonsrations  were suppressed by govt. with brutality. Lala Lajpat Rai was beaten with lathis at Lahore as aresult of which he became a Martyr. All the political parties condemned this policy of British Govt.
