Character sketch of Joe Keller and the importance of his role in the play 'All My Sons'

Joe Keller is one of the most critically acclaimed characters of drama. Sketched by the Nobel Laureate Arthur Miller for his famous drama, ‘All my Sons’, Joe Keller is much of a split personality.

The entire play pivots round him. It is through his character that Miller focusses on the very serious issues of corruption in an individual and the army.

Like  Willie Loman in Millers’s most popular drama, ‘Death of a Salesman’, both the heroes have two complete contrasts in their characters. On one side they are wonderful fathers, good family men but on the other there are certain diabolic traits in them.

Joe Keller is a self made man. A worker by birth he raises to the position of a factory owner by dint of hard work, merit and shrewdness.

Like a common American he is hard working and accomplished in basic traits but at the same time he is not transparent. When he realises that the cylinders his factory has manufactured are defective he still ships them to the army. When he is tried for the fraudulence he slyly puts the blame on his partner and friend Steeve Denver.

It is because of his defective shipment that twenty one young U.S Pilots lose their lives. In spite of knowing it he does not surrender to guilt resulting in the suicide of his son Larry who too is an army pilot and is ashamed of his father’s action.

Joe is a loud, hyperactive, simple but shrewd man. He works hard to keep his family happy even if it is at the cost of others. He is helpful but also conceited. His character is such that he cannot be completely hated, he has to be pitied. He is more of a tragic hero.
