India is know for its art and culture. Indian caves such as Ajnata, Ellora etc have all Murals. Art has exited since time immemorial. It was steadily influenced by invaders or those who settled in India. Eg: Mughal painting was blend of Indian and Persian.
In south India, especially Mysore. Painting of Hindus god and goddesses were famous. Another notable art was Tanjore painting that originated at Tanjore. The number of art schools also grew. Bengal school of art, shantiniketan etc are few art schools.

The tradition of art that became popular in colonial India was portrait painting. Unlike the existing Indian tradition of painting portraits in miniature, colonial portraits life size images that look real. The size of the painting itself projected the importance of patrons who commissioned these portraits.
