Generally mountains and plateaus do not have a high density of population due to the lack of basic facilities. On the other hand plains such as Ganga and Brahmaputra in India, Hwang Ho in China and Nile in Egypt are densely populated. The density of population in India, according to 1991 census, was 261 persons per sq km. But now according to 2011 census, it is 382 persons per sq km. The gap between India, the country with the second largest population in the world and China, the country with the largest population in the world has narrowed from 238 million in 2001 to nearly 131 million in 2011.
