The Godavari is the largest river system of Peninsular India. It is next only to the Ganga river and Indus river systems. The Godavari river originates in the Nasik district of Maharashtra in the Western Ghats. The source of the river is only 80 km from the Arabian Sea. The total length of the Godavari river is about 1465 km, and it finally flows into the Bay of Bengal.

From its place of origin, the Godavari river flows eastwards and receives a large number of tributaries both on its left and right banks. The Manjara is the only important tributary on the right bank. The main tributaries on the left bank of the river are the Penganga, the Wardha, the Wainganga, the Indravati and the Sabari.

Near Rajahmundry the valley of the Godavari river is about 2750 metres wide. At this place, the river gets divided into two main streams, the Gautami Godavari towards the east and the Vashishta Godavari in the west. The Godavari river forms a large delta before flowing into the Bay of Bengal. Its river basin includes parts of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.

Due to its large size and extent, the Godavari river is often referred to as the Vridha Ganga or Dakshina Ganga. The Godavari river causes heavy floods in its lower course, below Polawaram. The river is navigable up to a distance of about 300 km from its mouth.
