Seahorses are a type of teleost fish. They are in the genus Hippocampus. They are called 'seahorses' because their head looks like a horse's head. There are about 32–48 speciesof seahorse. Seahorses live in tropicaloceans.

The hippocampus is a major component of the brain of humans and other vertebrates. Humans and other mammals have two hippocampi, one in each side of the brain. The hippocampus is part of the limbic system, and plays important roles in the consolidation of information from short-term memory to long-term memory, and in spatial memory that enables navigation.

The structure of a seahorse is similar to that of mammalian hippocampus and the extra structure here, attached to the hippocampus and forming the curling tail, is the fornix. This is a bundle of fibers that form part of what used to be called the limbic system.
