The Story of an Hour" is not a novel, but a short story. Many people would say that "freedom" is the big idea in Chopin's mind. Thinking that her husband was dead, gave Mrs Mallard a sense of Victory as she thought about the days ahead when she would "live for herself," and not her husband. Mrs. Mallard loved her husband, only "sometimes." Ironically, she dies of "joy that kills" when he returns home.
Marriage is not very much like freedom. There are contractual promises, the same as there are everywhere else in life. Chopin may have been wanting to criticize how people looked at marriage.
