Regulating Act of 1773:
Regulating Act of 1773 was the first step taken by the British government to control and regulate the affairs of the East India company in India.
This act recognised the political and administrative functions of the company and laid foundations of central administration in India.
Features:
- The act designated 'Governor of Bengal' as 'Governor General of Bengal'.
- It created an executive council of 4 members to assist the Governor General of Bengal.
- It made the governor's of Bombay and Madras presidencies as subordinates.
- It established supreme court at Calcutta, comprising cheif justice and three other judges.
- It prohibited the servents of East India company from taking bribes from the natives and private trade.
- Finally it strengthened the control of British government over the company by requiring the 'court of directors' report on its revenue,civil and military affairs in India.
