Answer:
Indian Air Force (IAF) or Bharatiya Vayu Sena is one of the three units comprising the Indian Armed Forces, others including Indian Army and Navy. Established on October 8, 1932, Indian Air Force is the fourth largest and seventh strongest in the world.
With its motto as “Nabha Sparsham Deeptham ” (translated as “Touch the Sky with Glory”), the core purpose of IAF is to protect our country and its national interests within the Indian aerial space in tandem with the other units of armed forces.
In times of war or conflict, the role of IAF along with safeguarding Indian territory will be to support the other forces on ground – providing intelligence regarding vulnerable points, areas etc, stopping aerial attacks from the enemy, destroying strategic points of the enemy etc.
The importance of IAF can be seen during the Kargil war of 1999 where the air force engaged on the ground targets in mountainous regions of the Himalayas and led India to its victory.
