In order to overcome the shortage of labour on the plantation a triangular slave trade between Europe, Africa, and America began in 17th century. The National assembly held long debates about whether the rights of man should be extended to all French subject including those in colonies. There they were sold to plantation owners. French merchants sailed from the ports of Bordeaux or Nantes to the African cost, where they bought slaves from local chieftains.
