Write a note on the strong presence of local culture in the novels
Answers
The most common definition associated with literature is that it is a depiction of life. Therefore, a piece of literature cannot break free from the cultural context of the area in which it is written. Writers tend to portray a realistic picture of the society in order to give magnitude to their story and take help from it to deal with their themes and motifs.
For example, Chinua Achebe in his novel "Things Fall Apart" has described the culture of Igbo people in detail in order to insert the indigenous identity and cultural value. The novel, when read in the postcolonial context, tells about the identity of those people with all the cultural details like their religious rituals, their customs and language. He talks in long details about their ceremonial activities on weddings, funerals and other events.
Similarly, in his novel titled "Moth Smoke" , Mohsin Hamid, also, represents the Pakistani culture in accordance with the local context of the culture. So, in any piece of writing, cultural representation plays an important role and it turns out to be an inevitable part of that narrative.
