INDIA AND ERADICATION OF POVERTY

India, with its population of 1.3 billion people, now has 5 percent of its population living in extreme poverty. India's poverty situation is improving but problems related to poor health and sanitation, low levels of education, unemployment and malnutrition, remain.

The present criteria are based on a survey conducted in 2002. Going into a survey due for a decade, India's central government is undecided on criteria to identify families below poverty line. Internationally, an income of less than $1.90 per day per head of purchasing power parity is defined as extreme poverty.

STEPS TAKEN BY GOVERNMENT TO CONTROL POVERTY

  1. Jawahar Gram Samridhi Yojana
  2. National Old Age Pension Scheme
  3. National Family Benefit Scheme
  4. National Maternity Benefit Scheme
  5. Integrated Rural Development Program(IRDP)
  6. Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awaas Yojana.
