The Theosophical Society was established in 1875 by Madam H.P. Blavatsky & colonel H.S. Alcott in New York in 1886. Its headquarter was shifted in Ayer in Madras. The aim of the society was that all the religions are the different forms of ancient wisdom. So, the ultimate truth regarding God will be found only after going through all the religions of the world. The chief aim of Theosophical society in India was to establish the lost glory & honour of Hindu religion. Annie Besant's participation in the society galvanized its courses. A large number of educated Indians were attracted towards this society. Annie Besant became its president & worked for the upliftment of the Indian masses. Later Bal Gangadhar Tilak joined her & both of them championed the cause of Home Rule Movement in India.
