Tipu was the eldest son of Sultan Hyder Ali of Mysore and his wife Fatima Fakhr-un-Nisa. Tipu Sultan born in a Muslim family.

He is known for introducing lunisolar calender, new laws, new coinage and land revenue system. He fought many wars against the British to maintain the independence of his kingdom. He was treacherously defeated by the British on March 21, 1791. He is referred as "the tiger of Mysore".
