The process by which plants lose water from the leaves and aerial parts in the form of water vapour is called transpiration. The device that is used to measure the rate of transpiration is called potometer. Transpiration is essential in bringing rain because when plants transpire they increase the amount of water molecules in the air which results in rainfall. It also provides a cooling effect to the plants. It also creates a transpirational pull which results in the absorption of water and minerals from the soil.

The loss of water in the form of water vapour from aerial parts of plants, like stomata of leaves ,is know as transpiration.
Evaporation of water from the leaves to atmosphere results in a decrease in the water potential of epidermal cells.
The water which is lost is replaced by the water from xylem vessels in leaves.
Gradually it creates suction which pulls water from xylem cells of roots which in turn absorbs more water.
Thus the pull is called transpiration pull .
Hope it helps you!
