Italian unification, or the Risorgimento, was the political and social movement that consolidated different states of the Italian peninsula into the single state of the Kingdom of Italy in the 19th century.

STAGES OF THE UNIFICATION OF ITALY:

Stage I:

 In the 18th century, Italy was divided into a number of states among them the  most powerful was Sardinia.

 The north was under Austrian Habsburgs, the center was ruled by the Pope  and the southern regions were under the domination of the Bourbon kings of  Spain.

Cavour was the Prime Minister of Sardinia.

 He was assisted by an Italian patriot, Garibaldi and Giuseppe Mazzini.

Cavour supported France and England against Russia in the Crimean war.

 He got the support of France and England against Austria, and defeated  Austria  




Stage II:

 In the meantime, Garibaldi marched into the Island of Sicily’s and Naples with  his revolutionaries he liberated these kingdoms from the Spanish rule.

 In 1861 France left Rome, during the Franco Prussian War.

 Thus Rome became a part of Sardinia.

 The Final unification of Italy came in 1861.

 Victor Emmanuel II was proclaimed King of United Italy.
