Preliminary investigation into the Rs 500 crore land scam in Deoghar district has revealed that the racket was managed by people having connection in the corridors of power in connivance with employees of land record office.
The land mafia used to exploit family members of the employees of the land record office and changed the documents according to their needs. People involved in the crime even tampered with the records of government land that was earmarked for grazing of cattle. Over 300 acre of non-saleable land, the market price of which is more than Rs 500 crore, was transferred over the last few decades.
Police sources revealed that in the past few days some people had approached the SP office with documents which proved that their parents were given paltry sum ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000 for acres of land which was later sold in open market for huge amount of upto Rs 10 lakh to Rs 15 lakh. Some people involved in the scam had even contested assembly election in the past.
Deoghar SP Subodh Prasad, who investigated the sale and purchase of land in violation of the Santhal Pargana Tenancy Act, said the land dealers used to mislead the illiterate villagers and get their signatures (thumb impressions) on blank paper. "If the land owners refuse to put thumb impression on blank papers, the mafia got it done by threatening them of dire consequences," said the SP adding that once they got the thumb impression the got possession of the land forcefully and later changed the record to show that the land originally belonged to a non-tribal
